Your credit report is going to be used by various financial institutions and lenders to determine your risk profile. What this means is that whether you are approved for more credit or not would depend entirely on your credit report.
In essence, it is imperative for you to keep a firm eye on your credit report if you are planning to get a new loan, credit card or insurance policy. Keeping a firm eye on your credit report means that you have to get one every six months and go through all the items listed on it.
However, the big question is what happens when you find some item wrongly listed on your credit report and whether you can dispute it. The answer is that it is possible for you to dispute items on your credit report that you think are wrongly listed.
After you have got your hands on your credit report, you can go through it to look for inconsistencies and dispute them. There are three ways through which you can dispute your credit report. You can dispute the wrongly listed items through either phone or mail, in addition to an online request.
It is worth mentioning, at this point, that your choice of the method for disputing items on your credit report will also determine your avenues for checking the disputes. This means that if you contact the credit bureau through the internet then you can only check on the status of your dispute through the internet.
You should also note that as soon as you dispute an item or items on your credit report, the credit bureau will begin an investigation towards the same. This means that from the point that you dispute the items on your credit report the credit bureau will take 30 days to investigate and come back to you with an answer.
It would also be prudent on your part to furnish the credit bureau with relevant proof when you dispute items on your credit report. If you send your proofs after you have already disputed the items then you will have to wait for a period of 45 days before any resolution would be given to you by the credit bureau.
Waiting should not be a problem for you because after you have disputed the items on your credit report, you would get a written confirmation from the credit bureau that the matter is under advisement.
